PORTSMOUTH — On a request by Police Chief Thomas Lee, the Town Council Monday night voted unanimously to amend the existing budget to create the position of seasonal assistant to the harbormaster starting in January 2016.

Chief Lee said the job will be primarily clerical in nature, entail fewer than 30 hours per week during the boating season and allow the harbormaster to spend more time on the water. The position would pay $15 per hour, with a $6,500 budget for the position.

The new job would not require a budget increase, according to Chief Lee, who said the $6,500 will be transferred from the boat/engine line item in the harbormaster’s budget that came as a result of a recent increase in mooring fees.

New marshal in town

Andrew L. White was sworn in as the town’s fire marshal by Town Clerk Joanne Mower at the start of the meeting.

He’s served with the department for more than 10 years as an emergency medical technician and firefighter. Fire Marshal White will be implementing improvements to the Office of Fire Prevention aimed at providing the highest level of service to the town.

Road work

The council approved the Department of Public Works’ request to install crack sealing on the following roads for a total cost not to exceed $25,000: Flanagan Road, Joshua Terrace, Middle Road (from No. 192 to Schoolhouse Lane), Hedly Street, Fairview Lane, Friends Street, Anne Hutchinson Court, West Shore Road, Hall Road, Baker Road, Basin Street, Lafayette Street, Bourbon Street, Pleasant Drive, Quail Road and Dove Street.

Medeiros retires

Town Administrator Richard Rainer announced that George Medeiros, the town’s longtime building inspector, has announced his retirement, effective in January. Mr. Medeiros has been a town employee for nearly 30 years.

Appointments/resignations

The council accepted with regret the resignation of Allen Shers from the Zoning Board of Review. Mr. Shers was forced to resign in lieu of his recently appointment by the council to fill a vacant seat on the School Committee.

The council appointed Ann and Robert Vickers, both of 79 Heritage Drive, to the Bristol Ferry Town Common Committee.

Claudette A. Weissinger, of 24 Dove St., and Robert Gessler, of 95 Long Meadow Road, were both re-appointed to the Conservation Commission.

Joseph E. Reynolds, of 15 Pocasset Lane, was re-appointed to the Lower Glen Farm Preservation Committee.

License renewals

The council, sitting as a Board of License Commissioners, continued its public hearing on annual license renewals that first began on Oct. 26.

The board approved all license requests, including two Class A licences for Moriarty’s Liquor Locker on Park Avenue and Portsmouth Liquors on West Main Road.

The complete list of licenses approved Monday can be viewed here.

The council’s still not done, however. It continued the license hearing until its next meeting on Nov. 23.
